Openness, Tolerance and Artistic Freedom
Stavanger2008 will challenge our tolerance levels. We will create a Cultural Capital that will invite and actively pursue European partnerships for the development of projects where cultural and artistic contrasts will form the nucleus.
As Capital of Culture, Stavanger2008 will be a hospitable arena for an open meeting with new information, diverse values and experiences, independent of language barriers or political divisions. The Capital of Culture year is a powerful means for shaping international acceptance and acknowledgement of who we are and what we stand for. Myths and the customary perceptions of Norway will be challenged and transformed, Europe's knowledge of our society will increase from now until 2008.
The protection of freedom of speech and human rights is an important part of Stavanger2008's international cultural work. Since the late 1980s Stavanger has purposely prioritised work to promote literature and freedom of speech. Since 1997 the city has been a member of the International Parliament of Writers, a network of cities of Asylum for persecuted writers. Stavanger's international literature festival, Kapittel, has used this perspective to establish itself as an important arena for contemporary political debate, meetings with exiled writers, art criticism, human rights and freedom of speech.
Stavanger2008 intends to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century with a Capital of Culture that will extend the city's status as an Asylum City to include all of the arts. We plan to develop a cultural programme that will stimulate free artistic development.
